I came to Hickory Wind Ranch straight from treatment with three weeks sobriety. I was scared, raw and without tools to live life on life’s terms. However, when I walked through the door of the women’s house a sense of ease came over me. Here was a healing space where I felt safe and protected. The house manager welcomed me with open arms saying, “we already love you.” The women in the house seemed to genuinely care for one another with no strings attached. As a chronic drug abuser, this was something I was not used to. These women made it easy for me to learn how to trust and love. Though I hadn’t realized it, I was craving what Hickory Wind Ranch had to offer: community, structure and guidance. Strange to say, but the rules and chores of the house became a large part of my program. Being accountable to the house taught me how to be part of a community. House meetings and one on one sessions with Polly also became a part of my program. Here was a place where feelings and thoughts could be processed using the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. At Hickory Wind Ranch I was able to focus entirely on recovery and incorporate the principles of the program into every aspect of my life. There is a unique healing energy at this place that serves as the perfect forum for self-discovery in early sobriety. I spent eight months in sober living, during which time I transformed from a scared little girl into a woman of faith. Over those eight months I learned how to be honest, connect with a higher power and be of service to others. During my stay I saw other women like myself who were broken and sick when they got to Hickory Wind Ranch leave fully recovered. I have seen this place not only change lives but save lives. Without the twelve steps, Hickory Wind Ranch, and Polly I don’t think I would be sober today.
